1. Michael Roberts is perhaps the leading authority on Swedish history today, and this book is extremely well written. The writing style is clear, detailed and easy to understand; one is not bogged down in a slough of meaningless facts. What is brilliant about this book as well, is that Roberts carefully places Sweden and the actions of Gustavus in context with the events happening in Europe. It covers every aspect of Gustavus Adolphus and his reign; there are in-depth chapters on Gustavus' foreign policy, the domestic and important military reform that he carried out, the king as a person etc. Roberts has also painstakingly gone through many Swedish primary sources as well; the book is written by a historian who has definitely done all the hard work to get the facts right, and more besides. This is a book I would recommend without hesitation to anyone studying Swedish history.

1. For those who have an incklng to study the Napoleonic era with the intent of learning about the flags of Napoleon and his enemies,this book is it. Very beautiful illustrations of the flags of the early 19th century France which were used in conflict against England,Russia and Prussia and others. A historians choice book on the subject.

2. Like Virginia, I have been interested in my Finnish family roots since my twenties. There had been a little talk about one line of my family having "Lapp" roots I remember in discussions from when I was very small. When I started mapping my family tree, I decided to look into that family line, but I only reached dead ends. Asking family elders helped very little, as that information was either forgotten--or, for various reasons, didn't want to be shared. Having Sami ancestry has been very stigmatized in the Finnish-American community. Virginia's book helped me overcome some of the obstacles. I eventually found out that I was more than just a "little bit" Sami. I probably have at least as much Sami heritage as I do Finnish...a little bit mind-boggling to me, considering that my family has taken so much pride in our Finnish heritage. I still take pride in my Finnish roots, but now I also take pride in my Sami! Virginia also does a good job explaining why Sami heritage has been so suppressed both in the United States and abroad in a way that does not diminish the contributions and sacrifices our immigrant ancestors made for us when they created a new home for us in the United States. A must-read for anyone who is interested in pursuing genealogy and suspects they may have Sami ancestry. Studies have shown there are at least 30,000 Americans with Sami ancestry, but only about 2% are aware of their Sami identity. If this might be you, Virginia's book is a great guide to get you to your destination!

1. I was referred to this source by the FHC staff and am so grateful for that. It gave me, a beginner in Swedish ancestry research, a good understanding of the Swedish record keeping systems. The guide to interpreting the records is most helpful for those of us who don't speak Swedish. Am happy that the resource is still available through Amazon.com.



2. Before I get into this book's flaws, I have to say that this is the definitive book for English speakers who want to research Swedish genealogy. The meat of this book is excellent, and the details on original source material go beyond what you'll find anywhere.

   What I want to let potential buyers know is that the current edition of this book (2002) is a sloppy reprint of the 30 year old original. Putting the two books side by side, I had first thought that only the typeface and binding had been updated, to make it appear new. There is no admission anywhere in the book, copyright notice, preface, frontspiece or otherwise that acknowledges that this is a reprinted edition.

   After completely reading this reprint I did notice a few mentions of material made public in the 1990's. In the biblography, there are recent articles included that couldn't possibly have been source material for the pertinent sections of this book.

   There is no indication of who added the new material. Was it author, editor or publisher? None of the original material appears to have been altered, thank goodness. What would have been better would have been an acknowledged reprint of the old edition with a new preface covering the release of new source material and a new bibliography/appendix.

   Another problem is that the book does not cover ANY online material, databases, organizations or otherwise. Sweden is home to the oldest genealogy organization on the net, DISBYT, founded in 1981. DISBYT is also bilingual; Swedish/English and is essential to anyone online interested in his/her Swedish roots.

   It does not cover Swedish census records and parish records available online. Using online sources ONLY I was able to find the bare bones of my Swedish roots from my grandmother's christening in 1923, to the birth of my 8g grandmother in 1688. Needless to say, these sources deserve mention.

   So, buy the book and use the step by step material and glossary, but keep your eyes open for further source material and insights.




3. This book is absolutely fantastic and should be considered a must-have for anyone working on Swedish genealogy. It is well worth the money.



4. The Book is what I asked for. I was UNHAPPY with the shipping of the item. It was in a regular mailer which did have a bubble interior of the envelope, but it was not additionally bubble wrapped. The edges of all corners were dinged, so therefore I was unhappy with how it came. It was not bad enough to send back, but I really recommend an inner wrap of the book.

1. Detailed many things my great-grandparents didn't mention. Have now located the area of my families roots and plan to visit.



2. This is the best book I have read on researching your Swedish heritage. It gives good illustrations and gives step by step information on how to work your way through the parish records to find your family. I purchased this before paying for a subscription to Gen Line so I would know what to do and how to go about searching for the records I need. It also tells how to find out which parish to research to locate your family. I discovered that I have more research to do before I spend the money for GenLine. Thanks to this book I'm saving money in knowing what information I need before going through the parish records. This book is worth every penny.



3. I wish I would have ordered this book when I first saw it on Amazon several months ago - I'd have saved hours and hours of Internet searching. YOUR SWEDISH ROOTS is easy to read, loaded with every resource you'll need to trace your family tree, how-to instructions, a dictionary of helpful words, and a chapter suggesting where and how to travel within Sweden to visit the areas of your heritage.



4. This edition was purchased for a univeristy senior, studying SWEDISH and seeking a graduate program in his future in Gotenburg. The broad subjects within the handbook allow for a better understanding of his grandfather and great grandparents that emigrated from Sweden to USA.
