1 comments about During Wind and Rain: The Jones Family Farm in the Arkansas Delta 1848–2006.
  1. During Wind and Rain is by a local author. I have several of her books and have visited with her and heard her speak. Although this is not the most gripping story, it is very interesting and informative.

1 comments about Portraits of Conflict: A Photographic History of Mississipi in the Civil War.
  1. One of the best Civil War photographic histories I've seen. Contains hundreds of rare VERY rare Arkansas Civil War era photographs. The photos are explained in detail, not just captions. The quality of the books is excellent with thick glossy paper, clear photos, and well written text

3 comments about Boom Town: How Wal-Mart Transformed an All-American Town Into an International Community.
  1. I loved this book. I picked it up on a whim, and was surprised not only to learn about what a good citizen Wal-Mart is to its home town of Bentonville, but also to find out about the diverse groups that are making their homes in the area and really working to get along. I especially loved the story of the Palestinian builder who got his first break from a Wal-Mart manager 20 years ago, made a bundle, and today is working with local Jews to build a synagogue and charging only the cost of labor. This is a really great read for anyone who cares about that melting pot called America.

  2. The stereotypes she references in this book don't quite pan out. Instead, we only have her stereotypes and cliches about small town people. It seems to have been intended to be a book about the lenses people view each other with. The main lens, though, that seems play protagonist here is the writer's own. There are many better books on diversity than this one. Books that don't paint an unrealistic caricature of people. I wouldn't say, though, that everyone will dislike this. Many people like the cliches and simple descriptions of groups and their culture and behaviors. This book delivers that with excellent prose.

  3. I commend author for addressing a worthy topic. Alas, her anti gentilic attitude destroys her credibility.

1 comments about A History of Craighead County, Arkansas.
  1. This is an excellent book for geneology buffs that was written by a Craighead County native and copyrighted in 1930. It covers the time period before Arkansas was a state and includes sections of Craighead County history that include the people who settled and developed this county up until the time that he wrote the book.

This book also contains chapters of information about the growth of the county and about towns and villages, cemeteries, churches, schools, civil and world wars plus many other informing and amusing stories about Craighead County.

It is an excellent source of information for historians and people searching their ancestry. It also includes a "Who's Who" section of prominent citizens and also has an excellent index that was added in 1977 that allows for easier research of names.

1 comments about Mike Disfarmer: Original Disfarmer Photographs.
  1. If you have any interest in the photography of Disfarmer or the story of his photos than this is a must-have book. This showcases the prints that Disfarmer made himself while he was alive. These vintage prints show us what he intended with his images. The production is first rate and this is a generous selection of images. Being able to see the old prints is like taking a step back in time to another world. There is another book called "Vintage Prints" which came out around the same time as this and there is no overlap so if you are a collector you should get both of the books. If you were to buy just one of the two I would recommend this one since it is a little larger in size.

1 comments about Final Destinations: A Travel Guide for Remarkable Cemeteries in Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana.
  1. This is a good reference book. It lists some different cemeteries in the Texas,New Mexico,Oklahoma and Arkansas region. Some I already knew about but lot I did not. It has some historical information along with several pictures of the actual cemeteries. Would have liked more information listed about some of the cemeteries in Oklahoma. I'm sure a book on each state and its famous or interesting cemeteries could be written. I would recommend it for people doing genealogy in this region.

1 comments about ARKANSAS, 1800-1860: REMOTE & RESTLESS (Histories of Arkansas).
  1. Arkansas 1800-1860: Remote and Restless is a great history of early Arkansas by Charles Bolton. This entry in the Histories of Arkansas series takes the reader from early American settlement through Arkansas' antebellum period.

Although we think of the frontier as being the Wild West, Arkansas was very much the frontier during the period covered in this book. Bolton does a fine job of capturing the spirit of this frontier society, from hopeful settlers to the elite planters and politicians that eventually led Arkansas into the Confederacy and the Civil War. Particularly interesting are descriptions of the state's bank failures, which crippled early finance in the state, the Family or Dynasty that ruled Arkansas politics through most of the antebellum period, and how Arkansas was on the cusp of an economic boom just as the Civil War arrived and swept it all away.

This a must-read for those wanting to learn more about early Arkansas.
