2 comments about Very! Very! Sweet, Vol. 1 (v. 1).
- If you are tired of waiting for volume 8 of Chocolat to be released, try this excellent new series by JiSang Shin and Geo. Though there are some physical similarities between the main characters in this series and those of Chocolat, they have distinct and different personalities. Japanese native Tsuyoshi, a rich brat, is sent by his grandfather to Korea to reconnect with his roots. Be-Ri Kang is a frugal do-it-yourselfer who is secretly sweet on her sister's boyfriend, who lives with them as a tenant. When Tsuyoshi and Be-Ri Kang first meet, the sparks (or rather spit) fly in the wrong way. With lots of hot bishounen and laugh out loud moments, not to mention Be-Ri's (talking?!) cat, this mahnwa is so much fun!
- Whenever I hear the plot of one of Ji-Sang Shin and Geo's stories, it sounds incredibly boring. But, somehow, these two can turn a seemingly boring plot into something amazing. As always, the art is magnificent, the characters are great,--even if they look a lot like Chocolat characters, from the rich, bratty main male character to the three pigtails (on occasion) of the plain, yet quirky, female lead,--and it's hilarious. Although there are a lot of cultural jokes, there are translation notes at the end to help you understand what's going on. Unfortunately, I didn't notice them until I'd finished reading, because there doesn't seem to be any indication within the story that you can reference the back, so I suggest reading them first (it won't spoil the story if you read them first).

1 comments about Narratives of Nation Building in Korea: A Genealogy of Patriotism.
- This book will appeal to anyone who is interested in cutting edge scholarship on the history of modern South Korea and more broadly, on Nationalism and Nation-building. Jager succinctly and brilliantly pulls together the dispersed and disparate strands of how a nation develops a modern conception of its identity. In the case of South Korea the focus is on the gendered aspect of that identity, which is not only rooted in tradition but also in new narrative conceptions of that tradition. By taking a long and broad view of the dispersed development of these parallel and gendered narratives of modern identity (long because Jager's account covers the whole of the 20th century, and broad because she delves into literature, politics, historiography, economic development, and monuments and museums), Jager is able to show why South Koreans are who they are today with the kind of social structure that comprises its modern nation. Although this book is invaluable in the insights it provides to South Korean national identity, the true value of the book lies in providing a new approach to the study of national identity that can be applied to just about any other modern nation. This book is a must for the specialist and the generalist, the particularist and the theorist, in all fields of the humanities and the social sciences.

1 comments about Very! Very! Sweet, Vol. 5.
- I admit that I wasn't completely hooked to "Very! Very! Sweet" when it first came out (title was weird, wasn't crazy about Be-Ri's hairdo, the beginning of the story was so-so, etc). However, since I loved the Chocolat series, I decided to be patient & give JiSang Shin and Geo's new manhwa series a go.
Now, I can't get enough of it! I adore the main characters and what pops from the pages: laugh-out-loud scenes, unrequited love/s, tension, misunderstandings, love triangles, surprises, and some poignant moments as well. Even Be-Ri's hair is growing on me. =)
Check this series out (or go to Yen Press for more info)...
P.S. Thanks to Amazon for always shipping my mangas/manhwas fast!

1 comments about Ethnic Nationalism in Korea: Genealogy, Politics, And Legacy (Studies of the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center).
- Ethnic Nationalism: Genealogy, Politics, And Legacy by Gi-Wook Shin (Director of the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center) explores the roots, politics, and legacy of Korean ethnic nationalism. Descriptively analyzing the separation and differences in the communist north and democratic south of the Korean peninsula, Ethnic Nationalism addresses the general identity formation of the two Koreas. A core addition to academic library International Studies reference collections, Ethnic Nationalism is strongly recommended to the attention of political science, sociology, and cultural anthropology students studying the contrasts and similarities of North and South Korea through their collective history of anti-colonialism, civil war, authoritarian politics, democratization, territorial division, and globalization.
