I found a page listing (name). Can I get more information?

Unless the page addess starts with 'www.jacobgenealogy.com', it is not my page. It was most likely created using the Gedpage software that I developed. So please do not tell me about incorrect information, or get mad at me because you were listed without your permission. You can try to contact the owner of the page by clicking on the EMAIL link at the bottom of the page, or click the HOME link, and try to find some contact information there. Once you are done get a stencil of your name to use.

I lost my registration codes (computer crash, move, etc). Can you resend?

When I sent emailed the codes, I implored you to print them out. "PRINT THIS EMAIL, and save it! NOW! If you only save this email and your computer crashes, your will lose your codes." Still I recieved a huge number of emails requesting that I resend the codes. After getting requests to resend codes to some people for a SECOND time (apparently they didn't learn after the first time), I decided this is ridiculous. I no longer resend lost codes. Lets say you have a Microsoft program, and lose the access code for that. Could you call them up and ask them to send you another copy? I doubt it. And I only charge $10 for my program (same as I was charge 10 years ago). You can re-register for $10, and I will send you new codes. Hopefully you will print them this time.

    How do I register Gedpage?

A file named register.txt, comes with Gedpage. This is a text file that contains a form, and all registration information. It will be in same directory where Gedpage is installed.

How much does it cost to register Gedpage?

It costs $10(US), and registration codes are good for all versions of Gedpage, past, present, and future. Since it costs me $10 to cash a foreign check or money order, payment MUST be a check, or money order drawn on a US bank. US cash is also acceptable. Most customers from Europe, and Australia have sent me cash. For security reasons, be sure to wrap it in paper, or foil so it will not be visible through the envelope.

Can I pay with a credit card?

I now accept credit card payments with PayPal - its FAST, FREE and SECURE!

Make payments with PayPal - it's fast, free and secure!

Email me your completed registration form (see register.txt file that comes with Gedpage), and then send me $10(US) using PayPal (my email address is ). Please mention on your registration form that you are paying via PayPal.

My filenames are all uppercase, and don't work on my server?

Gedpage is compiled for windows 3.1. Windows 3.1 which runs under DOS, does not have upper/lower case file names. When you run Gedpage under win95 (which does have upper/lower case file names), it gives a case to the file names...either uppercase or, with an uppercase first letter. You can get around this by using certain ftp programs that have an option to force the uploaded filenames to lowercase. One is available for download from my page that will upload the files as lowercase. What ever ftp program you currently use may have this option also. Another solution it to exit to dos, and rename the files using the 'ren' command, to lower case filenames. (ie ren FAM*.HTM fam*.htm) Then you can ftp the files to your server.

Gedpage creates all my files with a .htm extention. My Internet Service Provider requires that I name my files with a .html extention to work?

The index.html file must have the .html tag to display correctly (because the browsers look for index.htm, not index.htm), but the .htm extenstion should work correctly for other files....it is the browser that interprets the .htm/.html tag (or .jpg/.txt/.gif/.ra/etc etc)...your ISP has little to do with this...in short...just upload the files as they are named...they should work.

I get an error saying 'Gedpage is not a valid Win32 Application'?

This is caused by the install program on a small percentage of systems. If you get this, you may simply delete the files that were installed with the install program, and manually copy over the files that were extracted from the downloaded file. This should work.

How do a create a gedcom file in Family Tree Maker?

In Family Tree Maker, choose Copy/Export under the File Menu. Save as type "GEDCOM (*.GED)". Click Save. Destination is FTW. Gedcom is 5.5. Character Set should be set to ASNI. Indent Records should be unchecked, and abreviate records should be checked. Then click OK.

I am new to genealogy. Can you tell me where to start?

A good place to start your genealogy is to get a book on the subject. The most comprehensive book I have seen is The Source: A Guidebook of American Genealogy. I highly recommend this book! Your local library will probably have this and other books about genealogy. Taking a genealogy class would also be very informative. You can also check out the LDS Family History Center closest to you. These are run by the Mormon church, but they are open to everyone.

Can you tell me where to find information about (name)?

Not really, but you can try searching Alta Vista, or Excite for the name. Another place to search is at WWW Genealogical Index.

Can you tell me where to find (name of obscure, out of print book)?

Try searching at Book Finder. Please do not complain to me if the price you find is too high, as I am not the one selling these books. Just be happy if you find a copy at any price.

When I click on a surname, they all show up as having been visited?

This is a bug in Internet Explorer, not Gedpage. The surnames all point to the same page, but to different points within it. Netscape recognizes the different points, but Internet Explorer only sees that it is the same page.

I don't have a genealogy program, which one do you recommend?

I used Family Tree Maker for several years and have liked it. I later switched from Family Tree Maker as it didn't seem export data to the gedcom file as well some as other programs. I have started playing with PAF 4.0, and it seems pretty cool so far. PAF is free which is nice. Some people have told me that The Master Genealogist is very good also.

What are the changes in Gedpage version 2.xx?

Almost all of the changes to Gedpage since version 2.00 have been bug fixes, or potential bug fixes. Many of the bugs affected a small number of users, or would manifest themselves only under specific conditions. If you are having a problem, try downloading the current version and see if it has been fixed.

2.06-I fixed a bug that would cause Gedpage to bomb if there were 2 '@' symbols on a line in a note, or source.
2.07-I changed the help file to an HTML file to make it easier to maintain, and added some material. I also changed the default color codes in the pick list to be browser safe.
2.08-I trimmed out some text in page that wasn't needed. I added support for sources on an individual that are not tied to birth, death, or marriage.
2.09-I modified the routine that builds the notes pages to line break differently. This should make the notes look correct for most gedcoms, but unfortunatly may mess up some notes from gedcoms that are formatted unconventionally.
2.10-I added Pedigree Charts. Fixed nag screen on Win32 version, which wasn't appearing on exit. I fixed notes routine to do a straight concatenation for CONC tagged lines.
2.11-Added support for ANSEL character set.
2.12-Added option to include photos. Added option to use .html extension on files instead of default .htm extension.
2.13-Fixed condition that left photo option always turned on.
2.14-Added some logic to filter out invalid gedcom files. Fixed a couple potential bugs.
2.15-Added more logic to filter out invalid gedcom files. Added logging of reason for invalid gedcom. Corrected line to delete photo index file.
2.16-Fixed bug that missed children when photos checked. Added support for gedcom files with id numbers of zero. Fixed u umlaut. Fixed bug that misread certain tags. Fixed Macintosh bombing issue.
2.17-Added pedigree charts. Added subdirectorys (PC version only).
    2.18-Fixed pedigree chart related bugs.
2.19-Added logic to catch error when 32767 file limit exceeded.
2.20-Added logic to catch error caused by infinite loop when ancestry loop is in gedcom file (someone is their own ancestor).
2.21-Fixed a bug where photo pages were being built without no photos.
Registration codes are good for any version of Gedpage.
